This course is an absolute must for any student who desires to counsel or coach others in relationships where alcoholism or another addiction is causing dysfunction in the family. This course will not teach students how to counsel alcoholics or addicts; but it will give students the extensive knowledge required to help the family and friends of alcoholics and addicts (who are grossly under-represented by most addiction programs). This intensive course focuses on alcoholism because it is the most widespread addiction. But the principles taught also apply to helping non-addicts in any other addiction-based relationship. This course is a one-of-a-kind in that it teaches students about the Empowered Recovery (ER) program for nonalcoholics, which they can, in turn, use to help their counseling and coaching clients. ER is a cutting-edge approach to helping the family and friends of alcoholics recognize, understand, and resolve an alcoholic relationship. It has helped thousands of individuals since its development in 2001. This course is taught by the author of ER, Dr. Douglas Kelley. Prerequisites: Course A61.
